SACE Essential English Tutoring in Adelaide

Essential English is practical English for work, training and everyday life. Students read and write workplace, advocacy, media and personal texts, and finish with an independent study of how people use language in a real setting. It suits students who want a clear, applied English subject, and it meets the SACE literacy requirement. Marks are lost on vague analysis, writing that ignores its audience, and language studies without a clear question.

For $80 per hour, we tutor Stage 1 and Stage 2 Essential English one-on-one, at your home, a local library or online. It's part of our SACE tutoring.

What We Cover:

Stage 1:
Year 11 Essential English

Stage 1 Essential English is marked by the school through responding to texts and creating texts, in written, oral and multimodal forms. The focus is on how texts work in everyday and workplace settings, and on writing clearly for a purpose. A C or better in 20 credits meets the SACE literacy requirement.

Stage 2:
Year 12 Essential English

Students respond to at least two kinds of text, such as workplace, advocacy, biographical, narrative or social media texts, and create two or three texts of their own. Written pieces are up to 800 words and orals up to 5 minutes. The usual sticking points are explaining how a text persuades its audience, getting a workplace format right, and keeping the language study focused.

Assessment:
And the Language Study

Responding to texts is 30% and creating texts is 40%. The external 30% is an independent language study of up to 1,500 words or 9 minutes, on how people use language in a setting beyond the classroom, such as a workplace, a sport, a cultural group or an online community. Students devise their own question. We help them choose one they can actually investigate, and give feedback within school rules.

How Essential English Sessions Work

We start with a piece of the student's own recent work and the teacher's comments, so the tutor can see whether the issue is understanding the text, organising ideas or expression. Sessions then follow the school program: reading the set texts together, explicit teaching of the format being assessed, and planning before writing.

The student drafts independently, and we give feedback against the performance standards the school uses. You get an update after every session.

Who Teaches Essential English

Essential English is taught by one of our high-achieving tutors, every one interviewed, reference-checked, and holding a current WWCC and National Police Check. Tutors are matched by year level and by the kind of writing the student needs to develop. You can meet them in a free, no-obligation online meeting before the first lesson. Every tutor works within our framework for teaching quality and communication.

Our founder, Bren Casipit, completed Year 12 English Literary Studies to an A+ standard at Glenunga International High School. For other year levels, see English tutoring.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Essential English easier than English?

It's different rather than easier: shorter, practical texts, and an independent language study instead of a comparative analysis. Check course requirements before choosing, and see SACE English tutoring for the other option.

Can you help with the language study?

Yes: choosing a setting and a question, finding at least two good language resources, and feedback on drafts within your school's rules. The study stays the student's own.

Does Essential English meet the SACE literacy requirement?

Yes. A C or better in 20 credits of Stage 1 Essential English, or a C– or better in 20 credits of Stage 2 Essential English, meets it.

Can sessions focus on the oral tasks?

Yes. We rehearse orals and presentations, with feedback on structure, delivery and timing.
