SACE Mathematical Methods Tutoring in Adelaide

Methods is calculus and statistics, and every topic builds on the one before. If differentiation is shaky in Term 1, integration won't make sense in Term 2, and the gap shows up in every test after that. Capable students often lose their A on reasoning and communication rather than on the working. Our job is to find the missing skill and fix it while it's still small.

For $80 per hour, we tutor Stage 1 Mathematics and Stage 2 Mathematical Methods one-on-one, at your home, a local library or online. It's part of our SACE tutoring.

What We Cover:

Stage 1:
Year 11 Mathematics

Stage 1 Mathematics has 12 topics. Topics 1–6 lead into Methods: functions and graphs, polynomials, trigonometry, counting and statistics, growth and decay (indices, exponentials and logarithms), and an introduction to differential calculus. The SACE Board recommends at least 20 credits of Stage 1 Mathematics before Stage 2 Methods. Topics 7–12 lead into Specialist Mathematics, which we also tutor.

Stage 2:
Year 12 Methods

Six topics: further differentiation and applications, discrete random variables and the binomial distribution, integral calculus, logarithmic functions, continuous random variables and the normal distribution, and sampling and confidence intervals. The usual sticking points are choosing the right differentiation rule, turning word problems into calculus, picking the right distribution, and explaining what a confidence interval actually means.

Assessment:
And Exam Prep

Skills and applications tasks are 50% (five or six supervised tests). The mathematical investigation is 20% (a report of up to 12 pages). The external exam is 30%: 130 minutes, with a formula sheet and two A4 sheets of handwritten notes allowed. We review every lost test mark, help scope the investigation without writing it, and run past SACE exams from Term 3. The 2026 exam is on Monday 2 November.

How Methods Sessions Work

Every student starts with a diagnostic conversation and some work on paper, so the tutor can see where the reasoning breaks down. Often it's a Stage 1 skill like algebra, functions or index laws. Sessions then follow the school program. The tutor checks recent work and re-teaches the idea with worked examples. Then the student tries similar questions alone while the tutor watches the reasoning, not just the answer.

We work a topic ahead where that helps, build the exam notes sheet across the year, and make the calculator save time instead of costing it. You get an update after every session.

Who Teaches Methods

Methods is taught by one of our high-achieving tutors, every one interviewed, reference-checked, and holding a current WWCC and National Police Check. We match senior maths by discipline, so a Methods student gets a tutor who is strong in Methods. You can meet them in a free, no-obligation online meeting before the first lesson. Every tutor works within our framework for teaching quality and communication.

Our founder, Bren Casipit, completed Year 12 Mathematical Methods to an A+ standard at Glenunga International High School. For other year levels, see maths tutoring.

Frequently Asked Questions

Methods or General Mathematics: which should my child take?

Check university prerequisites first. Methods suits students who need it for a course or who are comfortable with algebra. General Mathematics covers applied maths without calculus. We can talk it through on the assessment call.

My child passed Stage 1 but is struggling in Year 12 Methods. Is it too late?

No. Methods is cumulative, so we start by finding the Stage 1 skill that's missing, then fix it alongside the current topic.

Can you help with the mathematical investigation?

Yes: understanding the task, planning it and feedback on drafts, within your school's rules. We don't write it.

Do you also tutor Specialist Mathematics?

Yes, including Stage 1 Topics 7–12. See maths tutoring.
