SACE General Mathematics Tutoring in Adelaide
General Mathematics is applied maths without calculus: statistics, finance, matrices, networks and linear modelling. It suits students who want maths to count but don't need calculus, and a strong General result is worth more to most students than a weak Methods one. Marks are usually lost in the modelling: setting up the problem, using the calculator well, and explaining what the answer means in context.
For $80 per hour, we tutor Stage 1 and Stage 2 General Mathematics one-on-one, at your home, a local library or online. It's part of our SACE tutoring.
What We Cover:

Stage 1:
Year 11 General Maths
Stage 1 covers investing and borrowing, measurement, statistical investigation, applications of trigonometry, linear and exponential functions and their graphs, and matrices and networks, plus an open topic set by the school. It's all marked by the school, through skills and applications tasks and a mathematical investigation. A C or better in 10 or 20 credits meets the SACE numeracy requirement.

Stage 2:
Year 12 General Maths
Five topics plus an open topic: modelling with linear relationships, including linear programming; modelling with matrices; statistical models, including the normal distribution; financial models for savings, annuities and loans; and discrete models such as critical path analysis. The usual sticking points are interpreting correlation and residual plots, and setting up finance problems on the calculator.

Assessment:
And Exam Prep
Skills and applications tasks are 40%. The mathematical investigation is 30%: one report of up to 12 A4 pages. The external exam is 30%: 130 minutes on statistical, financial and discrete models, with one A4 sheet of handwritten notes and an approved calculator. We review every lost test mark, help scope the investigation without writing it, and run past SACE exams from Term 3.
How General Maths Sessions Work
Every student starts with a diagnostic conversation and some work on paper, so the tutor can see where the reasoning breaks down. Often it's a Stage 1 skill like rearranging formulas or reading a graph. Sessions then follow the school program. The tutor checks recent work and re-teaches the idea with worked examples. Then the student tries similar questions alone while the tutor watches the reasoning, not just the answer.
We build the exam notes sheet across the year and make the calculator's statistics and finance functions second nature. You get an update after every session.
Who Teaches General Maths
General Maths is taught by one of our high-achieving tutors, every one interviewed, reference-checked, and holding a current WWCC and National Police Check. We match senior maths by subject, so a General Maths student gets a tutor who knows its investigation and exam. You can meet them in a free, no-obligation online meeting before the first lesson. Every tutor works within our framework for teaching quality and communication.
Our founder, Bren Casipit, completed Year 12 Mathematical Methods to an A+ standard at Glenunga International High School. For other year levels, see maths tutoring.
Frequently Asked Questions
Methods or General Mathematics: which should my child take?
Check university prerequisites first. Methods suits students who need calculus for a course or are comfortable with algebra. General suits everyone else who wants maths to count. Our guide to choosing SACE maths walks through it, and see Mathematical Methods tutoring.
My child switched from Methods to General. Can you help them catch up?
Yes. We find the General topics they missed in Stage 1, usually finance and statistics, and fill them in alongside the current work.
Can you help with the mathematical investigation?
Yes: understanding the task, planning it and feedback on drafts, within your school's rules. We don't write it.
Is General Mathematics easier than Methods?
It's different rather than easy. There's no calculus, but the exam expects clear explanations in context, and the calculator work has to be quick and accurate.
