SACE Specialist Mathematics Tutoring in Adelaide

Specialist Mathematics is the most demanding maths in the SACE. It's designed to be taken alongside Mathematical Methods, and adds proof, complex numbers, vectors in three dimensions and harder calculus. Students who choose it are usually strong at maths, so effort is rarely the problem. The hard part is the jump to rigorous proof and multi-step problems, with two maths subjects competing for the same study time.

For $80 per hour, we tutor Stage 1 Mathematics and Stage 2 Specialist Mathematics one-on-one, at your home, a local library or online. It's part of our SACE tutoring, alongside Mathematical Methods.

Stage 1:
Year 11 Mathematics

The SACE Board says students heading for Specialist should take at least 10 extra credits of Stage 1 Mathematics. As a guide, Topics 7–12 prepare for it: arithmetic and geometric sequences and series, geometry, vectors in the plane, further trigonometry, matrices, and real and complex numbers, including a first look at proof by induction. Gaps here show up again in Year 12.

Stage 2:
Year 12 Specialist

Six topics: mathematical induction, complex numbers, functions and sketching graphs, vectors in three dimensions, integration techniques and applications, and rates of change and differential equations. The usual sticking points are setting out a formal proof, working in polar form with de Moivre's theorem, picturing lines and planes in 3D, and choosing the right integration technique.

Assessment:
And Exam Prep

Skills and applications tasks are 50%. The mathematical investigation is 20%: a report of up to 12 A4 pages. The external exam is 30%: 130 minutes across all six topics, with a formula sheet and two A4 sheets of handwritten notes allowed. Questions can combine topics, so we practise mixed problems and past SACE exams from Term 3.

How Specialist Math Sessions Work

Every student starts with a diagnostic conversation and some work on paper, so the tutor can see where the reasoning breaks down. Often it's an algebra or trigonometry skill that Methods doesn't stretch. Sessions then follow the school program. The tutor checks recent work and re-teaches the idea with worked examples. Then the student tries similar questions alone, writing full proofs and explanations, not just answers.

Because Specialist builds on Methods, we keep an eye on both subjects and work a topic ahead where that helps. You get an update after every session.

Who Teaches Specialist Math

Specialist is taught by one of our high-achieving tutors, every one interviewed, reference-checked, and holding a current WWCC and National Police Check. We match senior maths by discipline, so a Specialist student gets a tutor who is strong in Specialist. You can meet them in a free, no-obligation online meeting before the first lesson. Every tutor works within our framework for teaching quality and communication.

Our founder, Bren Casipit, completed Year 12 Mathematical Methods to an A+ standard at Glenunga International High School. For other year levels, see maths tutoring.

Frequently Asked Questions

Does my child have to take Methods as well?

Specialist is designed to be studied together with Mathematical Methods, and it builds on Methods calculus. We tutor both, so one tutor can see how the two subjects connect. See Mathematical Methods tutoring.

Is Specialist worth taking?

If a course your child is considering lists it as a prerequisite or assumed knowledge, yes. If not, and they're unsure, a strong Methods result on its own is usually the better outcome than two stretched maths subjects.

Can you help with the mathematical investigation?

Yes: understanding the task, planning it and feedback on drafts, within your school's rules. We don't write it.

Is Year 11 too early to start?

No. Topics 7–12 of Stage 1 Mathematics introduce the Specialist ideas, and a weak Year 11 makes Year 12 much harder.
