How Competitive Is the IGNITE Program? What Adelaide Parents Should Expect

Every year, hundreds of Year 6 students across Adelaide sit the ACER IGNITE assessment competing for a limited number of accelerated-program places at Glenunga International, The Heights and Aberfoyle Park. So how hard is it really to get in — and what separates successful applicants?

The honest picture

IGNITE is genuinely competitive. Places are limited, demand has grown steadily, and many applicants are already strong students. Being top of the class at school is common among applicants — it is the starting point, not the differentiator.

What actually separates successful students

First, familiarity with the test itself. The exam rewards students who recognise question styles instantly and have strategies ready — particularly in Abstract Reasoning, which schools do not teach. Second, time management. Many capable students simply run out of time. Third, complete, structured writing produced in a short window. And fourth, composure: students who have sat multiple full mock exams treat the real one as routine.

What if my child does not get in?
