How to Practise Abstract Reasoning for the IGNITE Exam

Ask most Adelaide parents which part of the IGNITE exam worries them, and the answer is almost always the same: abstract reasoning. It is the one component children have never seen at school — rows of shapes, sequences and patterns with one missing piece. The good news: it is a completely learnable skill.
What abstract reasoning actually tests
Abstract reasoning measures how well a student can identify rules and relationships in unfamiliar visual information — rotations, reflections, size changes, counting patterns and combinations of these. Because it does not rely on curriculum knowledge, schools rarely teach it, which is exactly why practice makes such a dramatic difference.
The most common mistakes students make
Rushing to the answer options before understanding the pattern. Fixating on one feature (shape) while the rule is about another (shading or position). And spending too long on one hard question while easier marks go unanswered later in the test.
A practice routine that works
Little and often beats marathon sessions. Ten to fifteen minutes of pattern puzzles a day, four to five days a week, builds recognition speed within weeks. Start untimed and focus on explaining the rule out loud — if your child can say why an answer is right, the skill is genuinely forming. Then introduce a timer, because IGNITE rewards speed as much as accuracy. Finally, mix question styles so your child learns to switch between rule types quickly.
How we build this into IGNITE preparation
Every Private IGNITE Tutoring preparation plan includes structured abstract reasoning training: rule-type drills, timed sets and full mock exams, with a progress report to parents after every session. Our founder Bren, a Glenunga graduate (97.35 ATAR), has helped 20+ students gain selective entry over the past four years.
