IGNITE vs ACER Scholarship Exams: What Adelaide Parents Need to Know

Many Adelaide families preparing for selective entry hear two names used almost interchangeably: the IGNITE exam and the ACER scholarship exam. They are related, but they are not the same thing — and understanding the difference helps you prepare your child for the right test at the right time.

What the IGNITE exam is

The IGNITE assessment is the entry test for South Australia's accelerated program for gifted and talented students, offered at Glenunga International High School, The Heights School and Aberfoyle Park High School. It is administered by ACER and typically held in late February, usually sat in Year 6 for entry into Year 7 the following year. It assesses Reading Comprehension, Mathematical Reasoning, Abstract Reasoning and Written Expression.

What ACER scholarship exams are

ACER also runs scholarship examinations used by many private schools across Australia to award academic scholarships. These tests cover similar skill areas — reading, mathematics and written expression — but the level, format and timing vary by school and scholarship level, and registrations are made through each individual school.

The overlap: why preparation transfers

Because both are ACER-designed, the underlying skills overlap heavily: reading quickly and accurately, reasoning mathematically beyond the school curriculum, and producing clear writing under time pressure. Students who prepare properly for IGNITE are usually well positioned for scholarship exams too, and many of our families sit both to keep their options open.

The differences that matter

Timing is different: IGNITE is a single late-February sitting, while scholarship exams are scheduled by each school, often earlier. Stakes are different: IGNITE offers a public-school accelerated pathway, while scholarships reduce private school fees. And competition differs: scholarship exams often have fewer places and can be even more selective than IGNITE.
